Google Play had 70% more app downloads than Apple’s App Store in the first quarter, but Apple’s app revenue was about 70% higher than on Google Play, according to App Annie.

In recent quarters, two trends have emerged in the battle between Apple and Google 's app marketplaces.
Google Play had more app downloads and its lead was growing. The Google Play store also was catching up to Apple’s App Store in revenue generated.
In this year’s first quarter, Apple reversed one of those two trends. It extended its app revenue lead by 10 percentage points, undoing the progress that Google had made in chipping away at Apple’s edge, according to a report from app industry research firm App Annie. Google Play’s advantage in downloads, however, continued to widen, the report said.
Revenue at Apple’s global App Store was about 70% higher than on Google Play in the first quarter, compared with about a 60% advantage in the third quarter of 2014, App Annie said. It was helped by strong performances in the U.S. and China.
Meanwhile, Google Play had 70% more app downloads than Apple, bolstered by demand in emerging markets such as Mexico, Turkey, Brazil and Indonesia, the report said. By comparison, Google’s lead in the third quarter last year was 60%.
China was a bright spot for Apple – mirroring the strong market share gains that the iPhone made in the country. Apple’s larger-screen iPhone 6 and 6 Plus proved immensely popular in the Chinese market where consumers prefer bigger display smartphones.
In the first quarter of 2015, China passed the U.S. as the top country for iOS app downloads, App Annie said. China still trails the U.S. and Japan for App Store revenue. The Google Play store does not operate officially in mainland China.
