Apple’s iPhone 6s Produces A Colorful Vision Of Haiti Through A Painter’s Eyes

In advance of the release of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, Apple gave one to RYOT, maker of VR and documentary films. They produced a short about a painter in Haiti who is trying to transform the very poor neighborhood he lives in into a bright palette of colors.
The entire film was shot on the iPhone 6s, which now supports 4K resolution. I noted inmy review of the new device, out today, that the video and camera quality had outstripped any smartphone I’d tested before. Those capabilities are put to good use in this new documentary, which is short, sweet and worth watching. I’m the son of a painter — both houses and canvases — and the story probably may have had a greater effect on me than it might on you. But it’s still worth your time.
RYOT co-founders David Darg and Bryn Mooser shot “The Painter of Jalouzi” just a few days ago in Haiti. It’s the story of Duval, who lives in one of the biggest slums in Haiti. He paints and inspires his neighbors to paint. The color, he believes, whether it’s on busses or walls or cinder block fences, is an agent of change.

RYOT has experimented with other kinds of alternative filmmaking before, and have created a series of VR films that allow people to experience news stories as if they were there themselves.
I asked Darg and Mooser a few questions via email, which they’ve answered here.
How did you come to choose Duval as the subject of the film?
When we were given the opportunity to get early access to the new iPhone 6S Plus, we knew we needed to find a location that would really demonstrate the 4K camera’s capabilities. The community of Jalouzi is the ultimate test for a 4K camera because the hillside is full of detail and color. We have been friends with Duval since meeting him after the Haiti earthquake in 2010 as aid workers on the ground, and we’ve wanted to tell his story for a long time.  Haiti receives so much negative press, but the Haiti that we know and love is full of color, beauty and resilience.  This project allows us to test drive the new iPhone 6S Plus and share Duval’s story, and the story of Jalouzi.
What about the project was made possible by the new features of the iPhone?
The 4K resolution allowed us to use SLR lenses and an adaptor for a real cinematic feel for some of the shots. The lenses focus the image onto a plate which the camera captures. The image stabilization in the iPhone 6S Plus is amazing and we bought an electronic gimbal to use as a steady cam, but ended up hardly using it because the internal stabilizer allowed for some pretty incredible handheld shots. The evolution of high quality cameras into smaller and smaller devices has made shooting in tough conditions easier, and the iPhone 6S Plus has made it really easy to get pro-quality footage on the fly.
Was the time-lapse section shot in 1080p or 4K?
The time lapse was shot in 1080p and there are a handful of 1080 slo mo shots, too.  The only shot we really struggled with was getting a good aerial shot with our drone. We maneuvered several cradles together to try and isolate the phone from the vibrations, but it was really hard to get a good steady 4K shot. As a solution, we had to shoot at 120fps in1080p to try and isolate a long enough steady clip.  If we’d had another day we could have gotten the drone rigged up to get the ultimate aerial shot but we had to make do with the shot you see in the film.
How did the quality of image compare to similar equipment that RYOT has used?
Apple has done an amazing job with the iPhone 6S Plus – not just with packing a 4K camera into a phone, but where the iPhone 6S Plus really shines is in it’s ability to capture color. We were blown away at the color accuracy and the image overall. It’s really impressive when the telephone in your pocket can produce images that rival high-end cameras. The iPhone 6S Plus’s footage performed really well in post production, too.  It doesn’t seem that long ago that we were stoked by our first camera phone, which shot a tiny pixelated image. We’ve come so far, so fast!
Do you believe that iPhones will become a staple for documentary photographers?
We’ve used iPhone footage for a few clips here and there in previous projects but we’re seeing a shift to where the iPhone could be used in more and more of our work. After this project we feel more comfortable relying on the iPhone to shoot pretty much anything. As a camera, it was actually really practical as the battery lasted much longer than the cameras we traditionally use (although we did have airplane mode on and no other apps running) and the memory was more than enough for a full day shooting (on the 128gb model.)
If there was a better way to use external lenses I think it would accelerate the iPhone into the major leagues and I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before someone creates a better adaptor or, better yet, Apple gets creative with lens mounts. No matter what, I’m sure we’ll start seeing a lot more iPhone footage in future productions. The funny thing is, because the quality is so good we’ll never know!
The short movie is pretty spectacular. Colors are bright, detail is sharp. Though most people won’t be able to watch it in its native 4K, you should if you can.
A few years ago, filmmakers began experimenting with the iPhone to shoot music videos, short projects and even feature films. But the rapid pace of improvements in the camera could open up options for an entirely new generation of filmmakers.
For just a few hundred dollars, they now have access to a high quality 4K camera that can be used in conjunction with adapters and lenses to solve creative problems.

One iPhone 6s gets delivered early

Apple's new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will become available this Friday, on September 25, but that apparently hasn't stopped the company and its carrier partners from sending out pre-ordered units early.
One AT&T customer in the US was happy to receive her rose gold iPhone 6s today. She shared a few pictures of the phone and its box to prove that what she's saying is true, but thankfully she also decided to benchmark the new handset.

Rose gold iPhone 6s delivered

As you can see from the images below (click the thumbnails for the full size versions), the Apple A9 chipset in the iPhone 6s is unsurprisingly faster than its predecessors.

iPhone 6s benchmarks

The benchmark used was Geekbench, and the iPhone 6s managed to obtain a 2,292 single-core score, and 4,293 for the multi-core run. A subsequent run seems to have turned up 2,413 in the single-core benchmark, which is a lot more than past Apple devices. The closest is the iPad mini with Retina Display, which managed to score 1,384 with its A7 chip.

If you're wondering how the iPhone 6s compares to the top dogs in the Android world, have a look at the image above. The short version is this: Apple's product loses out in the multi-core test, but wins in the single-core benchmark. This is somewhat logical, considering that Apple's mobile SoC designs have so far concentrated on using few but highly optimized cores. On the other hand, Android devices generally have more cores to work with.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 edge scores 5,188 in the multi-core run, but only 1,495 in the single-core test, as you can see. Even so, it's the closest to the iPhone 6s when it comes to single-core performance.

Front panel of iPhone 6s Plus pictured, Force Touch controller in tow

The iPhone 6s front panel showed a larger front-facing camera, now let's look at the iPhone 6s Plus front panel. Component store apple.club.tw got early replacement units of the panel, which shows an unchanged design but an added Force Touch controller (the Taptic Engine).
The "s" refresh is not the time for a major redesign so no surprises so far. The changes will be mostly internal, including better cameras – the selfie camera on the front stays above the earpiece but will allegedly go up to 5MP with 1080p video capture.

Alleged photo Apple iPhone 6s Plus front panel

The panel is white, which does nothing to confirm the Rose Gold color option which has been called into question recently. We'll find out next Wednesday when Apple unveils the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.

Apple schedules iPhone 6s and 6s Plus event for September 9

Apple has started sending out press invites for its next big event. This will take place on September 9 at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, California, a venue with seating capacity for around 7,000 people, and one that the Cupertino company hasn't used before.
This means we may witness one of Apple's biggest launch events in its history. It's obviously expected to announce the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, These have been said to sport Force Touch tech inside their touchscreens, a higher-res camera than their predecessors, a new chipset, and more RAM. As always with "s" releases, expect the exterior to remain unchanged.

Pre-orders for the new smartphones will start on September 11, two days after their unveiling, while sales should begin a week later than that, on September 18, for the first wave of markets. A second wave of availability should hit on September 25. All of this information has been leaked numerous times already, along with a possible September 8 or 9 announcement date. So now that this has been confirmed, there's no point in doubting the rest of the rumored timeline.
There could be other new stuff in store for us too. A more affordable iPhone 6c has been in and out of the rumors for many months now, so it's still unclear whether it will ever become reality. On the other hand, Apple might also unveil new iPads, perhaps even the much-rumored iPad Pro. A revised Apple TV may be in the works too, though there's no telling if it's going to be ready in time for this event.

Leaked iPhone 6s front panel

According to the latest leaked images obtained by 9to5Mac, the iPhone 6s will allegedly have a larger FaceTime camera. The current camera on the iPhone 6 has a resolution of 1.2 megapixels. With a bigger sensor, Apple could either go with a higher resolution or keep the current resolution and get better image quality from larger pixel size.

Another thing discovered from the images is the screen component that will be responsible for the haptic feedback for the new Force Touch feature on the iPhone 6s. Apple calls it the Taptic Engine on the new MacBook and it should have the same name on the iPhone, and basically cause the screen to vibrate when you Force Touch it, so it would seem like you pressed a button.

We have reported in the past on rumors of the back camera getting a resolution bump to 12 megapixel and adding support for 4K video, and the front camera getting a selfie flash, which is essentially the screen flashing white while taking a photo.
The iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus will be announced on September 9 at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, California.

24K gold iPhone 6s and 6s Plus

They say money can't buy happiness, but it certainly lets you cut in line... for a 24K gold-plated iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. We know, they haven’t been announced yet, but their prompt arrival is no secret. And this one is a lot cheaper than the $200K house Brikk iPhone 6s.
Goldgenie gives you several bling levels. Elite coats your iPhone 6s or 6s Plus in Platinum, Gold or Rose Gold for a mere £2,500 (yes, both 6s and 6s Plus are the same price). You get a snazzy Cherry Oak box too. This is for the 64GB version subtract/add £200 for the 16GB and 128GB versions respectively.

Swarovski Style Brilliance Elite is almost as pompous as its name, adding Swarovski crystals on the top and bottom panels on the back and along the side. And because someone at Goldgenie failed their Economics 101 class, these models also cost £2,500. Wait, the iPhone 6s Plus is £100 cheaper?

The Supernova option is an even bigger explosion of Swarovski crystals, covering the whole back. The price is (you guessed it) £2,500.

The Crocodile Embossed Leather & Swarovski Style Crystal Logo collection goes for the 3-in-1, coating the phone in Gold, the back with Red or Black crocodile leather and studding the Apple logo with Swarovski crystals. No need to ask how much this one costs.

Finally, capitalism wins over the flat rate shenanigans of the other models and the Diamond RockStar Limited edition bumps the price to £10,000 (hey, you get 128GB as standard. This one looks like the Brilliance Elite version, except this time it's true diamond brilliance rather than Austrian-sourced pseudo-gems.

An important note – these prices are without VAT (which alone will cost as much as a new iPhone). Also you need to deposit 50% beforehand. You do get free shipping so that's something we guess.

Apple iPhone 6S to pack Force Touch display, stronger aluminum

KGI Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo might be a name that doesn't ring a bell, but the guy has a good track record of guessing the next iPhones right, well before the official announcement. Today he supplied us with a new portion of details about the upcoming iPhone 6S generation.
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the next iPhone will offer a major change - Force Touch display. The tech is already available on the latest MacBook 12" and MacBook Pro lineup, as well as on the Apple Watch. If true, this will offer an entirely new way of interactions with the iOS 9. It will add some extra 0.2mm on all sides of the iPhones though.
The iOS 9 beta version is now available, while public previews are on the way. The developers are already digging through the code of the upcoming OS and already begun unraveling some interesting facts as mentions of a LED flash for the FaceTime camera. If a Force Touch addition is indeed coming with the iPhone 6S, the iOS 9 code should spill the beans on it rather soon.

Another suggestion Ming-Chi Kuo makes is Apple will be using the Series 7000 aluminum for the iPhones. It is up to 60% tougher than the current aluminum alloy and is already in use on the Apple Watch Sport.
Finally, the next iPhones may launch in Rose Gold in addition to the current paintjob trio - Space Gray, Silver and Gold. This rumor has been around for a while and it may as well finally become a reality.
The next generation of iPhones should go official in September. The Fall will also mark the release of the iOS 9 and Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan.
