Google Play Services 7.3 Adds A New UI For Trusted Places And Finally Makes The Persistent Android Wear Notification Dismissible [APK Download]

Google Play services made a rather lofty jump from 7.0 to 7.3 a couple days ago. While there don't appear to be any big API changes for developers, a couple of pretty obnoxious issues were cleared up for regular users. It looks like the Home address in Trusted Places is not only working again, but there may be an improved UI that makes it even easier to set up safe zones (if you didn't already have it). Android Wear owners will also be pleased to say goodbye to the persistent notification. As always, we've got a download link below.

What's New

2015-04-15 21.11.512015-04-15 21.11.35
Leading the charge for change is a new UI for configuring Trusted Places. [Update: Some people have had this UI for a while. It may have been triggered by a server-side switch prior to this update, which probably enables it for everybody.] There is now a convenient maps widget with a ring of blue dots that represents a chosen safe zone. This implementation also breaks away from the reliance on specific street addresses and instead allows users to pinpoint specific map coordinates. Of course, it's still possible to search and enter locations by address, so users have the best of both worlds.
Android Wear users were the beneficiaries of another change that was made with this update. We're all familiar with a persistent notification that was always displayed if there was a paired smartwatch, regardless of its connection status. Naturally, this was irritating since it just served to clutter up the list of notifications. With the latest update, this notification is finally dismissible. It returns whenever a paired watch loses or re-establishes connection, but some reports claim that it can disappear on its own if enough time passes. Thanks Anthony DeFrancesco.
Installing Play Services 7.3.27 will also change the pull-to-refresh implementation in Google+ from an animated bar to Google's newer rotating arrow.
These are the changes we know about, so far. If anybody stumbles onto something else, let us know in the comments!
Download
The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK.
Version: 7.3.27 (1857062)
To figure out the right version of Google Play services for your Android device, go toSettings -> Apps -> Google Play services, and look at the last 3 numbers in the parentheses. You'll see something like -XYZ where:
* X defines Android version:
  • 0 for Android <5.0
  • 4 and 7 for Android >=5.0
  • 8 for Android TV
* Y defines CPU architecture:
  • 1 for armeabi
  • 3 for armeabi-v7a
  • 4 for arm64-v8a
  • 7 for x86
* Z defines DPI:
  • 0 for universal
  • 2 for 160
  • 4 for 240
  • 6 for 320
  • 8 for 480
Notes:
  • It seems that -7YZ builds became -4YZ with Google Play services 6.5. If you were on -7YZ before, you should now install -4YZ.
  • Looks like -8YZ builds are for Android TV.
Examples:
  • -014 for Android <5.0 armeabi CPU 240 DPI device
  • -438 for Android 5.0+ armeabi-v7a CPU 480 DPI device
  • -876 for Android TV x86 CPU 320 DPI device

Revenue Gap Between iOS And Android Apps Grows, Thanks To China

Due to Android’s sizable market share, Google Play apps have historically led iOS apps in terms of the number of downloads, while iOS apps have consistently beat out Google Play apps in revenue. But according to new data out this morning from app store analytics firm App Annie, that gap is still widening – in a large part due to iOS’s growth in China. As of Q1 2015, iOS App Store worldwide revenue was about 70% higher than on Google Play, up from 60% in Q3 2014, the report notes.
China’s importance to the app industry cannot be understated. China has, for the first time since App Annie has been measuring iOS downloads by country (July 2010), surpassed the U.S. in quarterly iOS downloads in the first quarter of 2015.
This change should not be all that surprising, given that recent reports of record-breaking iPhone sales in China. In urban areas, Apple accounted for 25% of smartphone sales in Q1 2015, according to Kantar’s data. And Apple had previously said that China had accounted for $16 billion in sales in the market, while its mobile operating system grew year-over-year at the expense of Android. More importantly, perhaps, the number of first-time smartphone buyers in China who are selecting iPhone is still increasing.
The iOS surge in China is, in part, likely related to the increased sales of the bigger-screened iPhone 6 and 6 Plus devices in the Chinese market, as demand for larger screens is particularly high in Asia, says App Annie. For comparison’s sake, in Q4 2104, those phones with screen sizes between 5 and 7 inches were roughly 60% of total smartphone shipments in China, versus 40% worldwide and in the U.S.

In terms downloads by category, Chinese iOS users preferred Games and Photo & Video apps, including those like Tencent’s Pitu, which became one of the most popular apps in the quarter, thanks to its focus on features that appeal to its local user base, like its beauty, make-up and cosplay filters. Other apps like IN and Fotoplace also did well during this time.
However, though downloads in China are soaring, the U.S. still tops that market in terms of revenue, App Annie says.

Emerging Markets Continue To Fuel Android Downloads

Meanwhile, Google Play downloads increased by 70% during the same time frame of Q3 2014 to Q1 2015. These increases were attributed to Android’s growth in emerging markets, especially places like Mexico, Turkey and Brazil. As new, first-time smartphone owners buy Android devices, download volume soars in these markets.
Mexico, in particular, made significant gains in Q1, overtaking what App Annie refers to as an “app store superpower” and a “stronghold for OEMs,” South Korea which is now out of the top five countries by Google Play downloads. During Q1 2015, the Games and Tools categories saw a big lift in Mexico, the latter which features a range of apps from security apps to keyboard replacements and more. The country is now ranked #5, following the U.S., Brazil, India, and Russia by Google Play downloads.
2015-Q1-Market-Index-Charts_GP_TopCountires_Downloads
2015-Q1-Market-Index-Charts_GP_TopCountires_Revenue
The growth in downloads is not only due to overall smartphone growth, but in particular Android’s traction in that country. Android’s operating system is quite popular in Mexico, with 85% of the smartphone installed base according to IDC, and 29 million smartphone users in 2014 (or 24% of Mexico’s population), per eMarketer. By 2018, it’s expected that smartphone ownership will grow to 50 million here, which means that Mexico’s growth in terms of app downloads will grow as well.
Meanwhile, the countries leading in Google Play revenue include Japan, the U.S., South Korea, Germany and Taiwan – a very different list than those for downloads. The same lists on iOS, however, are more similar. By downloads, it’s China, then the U.S., Japan, the U.K, then Russia. And by revenue, the U.S. beats out Japan, China, the U.K. and Australia.
App Annie also spotted another change in Q1 related to what apps perform well, by way of revenue, on Google Play. This past quarter, Education apps surged to overtake the Entertainment category, and now rank #2 behind Games. Recently popular were a number of language learning apps like Babble and Rosetta Course, as well as brain-training apps like Lumosity and NeuroNation.

New "On-Body Detection" Smart Lock Mode In Android Seems To Be Hitting Some Devices

Google is currently rolling out a new smart lock mode called on-body detection. The feature, described in the screens below, uses your accelerometer to figure out when your device is in your hand or pocket, and lock when it's not. The idea being if you leave your phone sitting on a table or forget it somewhere, it will lock, preventing would-be thieves from easily accessing your data.
Smart Lock nexus2cee_screenshot_2015-03-20-14-50-03 Detection Prompt
Once you unlock your phone, it will stay unlocked while you're holding it or it's in your pocket. Once you set it down, it will lock again. Picking it back up requires you to manually unlock it (assuming you're not using another trusted authenticator factor). If you hand the phone to someone else while it's unlocked, it will not lock - the feature isn't able to recognize that you specifically are holding the phone. It just knows when the phone is being held / pocketed and when it isn't.
The device the feature was noticed on was a Nexus 4 still running Android 5.0.1, but we're now seeing it on many devices including most Nexuses. This doesn't seem to be a feature related to Android 5.1, but you probably need 5.0+ for it to work. We do know our tipster has the most recent version of Play Services (we tried with the same version on our Nexuses, and no dice), and we know trusted places is enabled by Google Play Services, so it seems likely this on-body detection mode is probably activated similarly, and isn't part of the core OS.
This appears to be Google slowly launching a new feature with a small rollout to begin with, so don't worry if you're not seeing it yet - we've got multiple confirmations it's out there.
Let us know if you're seeing this on your devices running the most recent (7.0.97) Play Services - we've got confirmation that it's showing up on non-Nexus hardware running 5.0+ as well.

Some Users Are Seeing Calendar Agenda Cards And Combined Travel Cards In Google Now

Have you noticed anything new when you open the primary Google Now interface? Probably - Google seems to be adding more stuff all the time, including support for integration with third-party apps. Over the last few weeks we've been getting tips about a new Calendar card, an agenda view for upcoming busy days, from a variety of Android Police readers. The rollout on this one seems particularly slow - don't be surprised if you don't see it for several weeks more.
nexus2cee_screenshot_2015-03-20-21-32-31 nexus2cee_screenshot_2015-03-20-21-36-40
The initial card shows the next chronological item on your calendar and an expansion button. Tap the button and you'll see the schedule for the entire day. Like all Google Now cards, it can be temporarily dismissed or permanently disabled with the hard-to-see triple-dot menu in the upper right corner of the card.
Google Now has always been pretty savvy when it comes to travel, automatically grabbing flight info, hotel information, destination weather, and other relevant info from your Gmail account. Now instead of individual cards for flight, destination, et cetera, some users are seeing a combined card: "Your trip to [destination]." Expand it and you'll see a grouped collection of relevant information from Google Search, Gmail, and Google Calendar, including flights, personal agendas, weather, attractions, and even a currency converter.
Screenshot_2015-03-21-14-49-23 Screenshot_2015-03-21-14-49-33 Screenshot_2015-03-21-14-50-13

Google Now features are usually rolled out with server-side updates instead of updates to the Google Search app itself, and that appears to be the case here. Only one Android Police staff member has seen the agenda card and none of us have the combined travel card, so it looks like this one is going out in very small batches so far.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of rooting your Android device?

If you are an Android user, I'm almost certain you heard the word “root” being thrown around. You've probably been asked if your phone has been rooted or if you plan to as well. Being uncharted ground to new users or people who have never bothered to look into it, the term “root” can be somewhat scary. What does it mean? Do you risk turning your phone into a very expensive paperweight? What are the advantages or disadvantages of rooting? Well, I am here to relieve you of your fears and answer those questions.
Typically the first thing I do to each Android device I buy as soon as I pop the battery in and power it on is root it. It's to the point now that I rely on a lot of applications that require root access. Without them I feel as if I'm not getting full functionality of my phone.

What does “root” mean?

Rooting is essentially giving you administrative access to your device. Once your device is rooted, you will have an application by the name of Superuser that can be found in your app drawer. This application is where you can control the permissions of any applications that require "administrative" rights. This is a simple way of looking at it.
I get asked by people all the time if rooting is like jailbreaking an iPhone. It's sort of the same concept, but don't get caught saying that around  any Android fans, you may get jumped.

Disadvantages

We'll start with the lesser of the two, drawbacks. Once your phone has been rooted, your manufacturer warranty is null in void. This is probably the number one reason for people not rooting their Android devices, but if you decide rooting is not for you, the process is just as easily undone. Reversal of this process leaves no evidence of ever having been done and your warranty is back in place.
Another negative that I'm aware of is the risk of bricking your shiny new toy. The chances of this are slim to none, but if you don't know what you are doing, your odds of creating the coolest paperweight in the office are much higher. If you choose to root, please read instructions carefully. The most important steps – they're all important – are likely in bold, red, or bold and red font usually followed by exclamation marks. Pay close attention to those steps.
Security is a growing issue in mobile devices, especially since many technologies are moving to mobile space. Gaining root access does bring to light some security concerns, but it isn't as serious as it seems. Nick Kralevich, an engineer on the Android Security Team, states that rooting, "...is not a feature of a device; rather, it is the active exploitation of a known security hole." He goes on to explain that Android is "backed by a solid implementation" and that applications are "sandboxed" from each other. This means that you have to allow permissions to any application that attempts to interact with another. You are in control, even when rooted.

Advantages

When it comes to advantages, the list is nearly endless. However, there are a few that truly stick out among the crowd. First and foremost, you have full control over your system. You can install applications like SetCPU that allow you to set the CPU speed of your device manually. It also allows you to overclock (set the processor speed higher than the manufacturer rating) your device, but I wouldn't recommend that unless you know what you're doing. Other performance tweaks like the relocation of caches (browser, maps, market, etc.) can also be utilized with root access to improve the speed and battery life of your device.
The most annoying thing about buying subsidized phones is the carrier bloatware that nobody really wants to have to filter through. With root access you can remove whatever you want and install essentially whatever you want – barring it's compatible with your phone – at your own leisure. You're taking charge of your device, in a sense.
Along with rooting you will often hear words like custom recovery and ROM. These are generally for the more advanced users, but what these things allow you to do will extend the customization of your device to nearly endless possibilities. Installing a new recovery, or flashing as it is commonly called, allows you to create backups of your device on your SD card. Much like your computer's recovery can create a backup image of your current settings, files, etc., the custom recovery you flash to your Android device will back everything up so when you restore it, it is exactly how you left it down to the settings, applications, and text messages.
Custom ROMs are different versions of Android that have been modified by developers to make it look, feel, and operate however they want. For example, the myTouch 4G ships with it's own version of Sense UI, nicknamed Espresso 2.0. I grew bored with it and someone had created (ported) a custom ROM for the myTouch that was actually the software from the Desire HD, which is skinned with an entirely different version of Sense UI. Using custom ROMs, you can have both your hardware and software of choice, given that the hardware you choose has developers working on it.
Even if you don't want to go to the extreme of using custom ROMs, root access will allow you to install applications that weren't necessarily meant for your device. For instance, if there is an application that is specific to a carrier or manufacturer, given the proper tweaks by a developer, it can be installed on nearly anything running Android.
There have been home replacement applications in the Market available to non-root users for quite some time. A unique benefit over launcher replacements is the ability to theme. However, theming a launcher doesn't venture too deep into the system. Using themes created for specific ROMs, you can totally deck your device out however you want to. Applications like MetaMorph can help you with this process.

Takeaways

As you can see, the advantages of rooting far outweigh the disadvantages. This doesn't mean it is for everyone though. Some people will live happily ever after without ever having to root their Android device. If you are interested in rooting or diving a little deeper into Android and seeing how you can get your hands dirty, head on over to PhoneDog's Android network site,DroidDog.com. There you will find a little more than just your typical Android news.
The most important part of all is knowing your risks. Rooting can be dangerous if you don't have the proper know-how and jump into the process all willy nilly. Be patient, read instructions carefully, and don't be afraid to ask for help. You also must now that you are doing this at your own risk. If your device becomes damaged in the process, PhoneDog nor DroidDog are at fault. I am not telling anyone to go root their device now, I'm simply educating on what it is and how it can be used. You have been warned.
With that out of the way, don't look at rooting like it's a dirty word. Carriers and some manufacturers make it out to be; but rooting can be fun and extends the capabilities of your handset immensely. Straight from the Android Security Team over at Google comes this quote about rooting, “It should be no surprise that modifying the operating system can give you root access to your phone. Hopefully that’s just the beginning of the changes you might make.”

Google reportedly boosted Nexus 6 performance with 5.1 update

It seems Google has been messing around under the hood of the Nexus 6. According to Francisco Franco, developer of franco.Kernal, Google has made some changes in Android 5.1 that boosts performance and should improve battery life.

The Snapdragon 805 now runs all four cores all the time after the update, whereas it would previously idle some of the cores depending upon the load. This ensures there is no time wasted in bringing the cores up to speed when a task requires it and you get maximum speed instantly. The improvements to ART and other optimizations also help improve performance.
To save battery life, Google has disabled the thread migration boost routines. This feature boosted the clock speed of a core A when it was being handed over a thread from another core B, so that the speed of A was same as that of B to reduce perceived lag. Seemingly, this was not a very important feature, so it has hence been disabled to save on some power.
Many users have reported improved performance and battery life since the 5.1 update. It's not yet known if the Nexus 5 also has similar modifications included in its update.
